Production schedules

  • The best way to manage media projects is to create a production schedule. This brings together logistic and resource details and includes all tasks, milestones and the time-scales and deadlines and allows the tracking of progress.
  • This is shared with all members of the production team and contains details of the initial proposal, key milestones agreed with the client as well as final deadline.
What are the key terms in a production schedule?
  • Tasks- actual jobs that need doing
  • Deadlines- the date when these tasks must be completed
  • Milestones- identified point to be reached within the project
  • Contingencies- back up plan/ideas, alternative option.
Project management tools- Gantt chart
  • Most popular project management tool
  • Helps to organise and oversee the progress of a project
  • Becoming increasingly sophisticated
  • Traditionally made on a simple excel sheet
  •  Karol Adamiecki invented the gantt chart
  • Gantt charts plot time along the horizontal axis
  • Along the vertical axis are activities and tasks
  • Equal units of distance along the horizontal axis represent the units of time
  • Each block represents a task
  • Length of the bar represents how long the task will last
  • Positioning of the bar represents the scheduling -the way the tasks are positioned represent the order the tasks need to be done in
  • Other work streams run in parallel
  • A simple shape can represent a milestone, such as a diamond
  • Draw a vertical line on the day you are at so you can assess if the employees are on track-contingency
  • Always include a key for gantt chart
  • Main reason for gantt charts is to monitor and track progress

  • Choose revenue stream
  • Hire directors, producers, editors and a camera crew
  • Rent/buy the resources needed
  • Find a location
  • Create a mood board of ideas
  • Create a storyboard
  • Create a script
  • Editing
  • Distributing
  • Marketing and advertising

  1. Well done Sasha, another well constructed blog post. Make sure you're confident with those 4 key terms when thinking about project management.

Thank you for embedding in your Gantt Chart!

  2. There's a weird formatting issue with the lower half of your blog post, you might need to go back and delete all the random quote marks?

Visualisation diagrams What is a visualisation diagram? A drawing created by hand or digitally illustrating what the final product should look like when created A pre production document Why do we use it? To interpret how the final product will look Plan the layout of a media product in a visual manner to show how a finished item may look What can it be used for? Animations Costumes A logo  DVD cover Web page layout Magazine cover Advert What content should be included? Sketch Multiple images and graphics showing their size and position Layout of the page Colours and colour schemes Placement and style of text Fonts to be used White space Annotations to give detail on things above

Sitemaps, wireframes and visualisation diagrams

A shot by shot list is important alongside these documents- storyboard and script A sitemap A sitemap is a list of pages of a website, those used during the planning of a website by its designers.  Three main types- Those used planning a website Available for viewing online by those visiting a website  A structured coded list designed for search engineers  A wireframe  A visual representation of the framework of a website  Aims To help arrange the site for a specific purpose (informed by the business aims or a creative idea) Shows the websites layout Shows how different elements of the site interact with each other Why use wireframes Helps programmers and designers think think and communicate the structure of software or website they are building. The same screen can be built in different ways, but only some communicate the message with easy to use software or website. An effective interface structure is possibly the most important part of designing softwa...
